Abstract:

As part of an effort to implement outcome assessment, the Nanyang Business School at the Nanyang Technological University constantly collects evidence of student’s learning. An eRubrics module built within the eUreka System is used for this purpose. Previously, faculty provided evidence of student’s learning through hardcopies. Data collected at the course-level is then re-entered and compiled to form evidence of student’s learning at the program level. The process is manual, tedious and error prone for both faculty and administrators.

The introduction of eRubrics provides an online, paperless and efficient way for faculty to access students’ performance easily. Administrators also find it convenient to consolidate evaluation data across different courses seamlessly. Most importantly, it enhances student’s learning by providing both feedback and feed forward opportunities. Faculty can create or re-use a set of eRubrics mapped to clear learning goals and outcomes. As part of feed forward process, students are able to review the eRubrics evaluation criteria so that they know what and how they will be evaluated. Students are then evaluated on their project or group work based on the same set of Rubrics with appropriate feedback given by faculty. As part of formative assessment, students receive these feedbacks during the coursework and respond to improve themselves. Faculty, on the other hand, analyzes the assessment result and adjusts their instructions with more focus on the student’s weaknesses.

To allow students to take charge of their own learning, the Peer and Self Evaluation tools are also implemented. Students can, thus, evaluate themselves and their peers based on the set of eRubrics created by the faculty.
